Similar headroom, less punch, more linear overdrive.
5D3 ADSR (attack decay sustain release) versus 5E3 circuit: Shorter attack and decay amplitude nets less touch sensitivity (more compressed) and smoother response - where digging in with the pick can push a low-volume 5E3 into overdrive, the 5D3 remains cleaner. Sustain time (no more than the 5E3) seems longer in the 5D3 due to the flatter attack-decay curve.
With either humbuckers or single-coils, the 5D3 is a great circuit for fast, easy and controlled action when operated at low gain settings as well as smooth and singing when overdriven. Smooth-cone Weber P12R speakers sound particularly nice across the board.
Frequency response: The 5D3 exhibits a sweet top and fat bottom end. Jumpering channels and/or experimenting with volume interaction and tone settings can dial-in lows and shape highs at any gain setting and pickup type and/or position. Overall, the 5D3 sounds just as vintage but a bit darker and smoother than the 5E3.
Where a 5E3 can punish those less acquainted with its extreme touch-sensitivity, the 5D3 is an easier amp to play due to its flatter ADSR response.
